When I was in school I learned about mini-comics and zines and realized I didn’t have to wait to be asked to make comics, I could just MAKE them. So I started making comics and haven’t stopped since.

Mikayla Walton: Who are your artistic influences?

Sean Dempsey: I try to find artistic influence in a wide variety of media. Comics are definitely my most integral pool of influence, including artists such as Brian Ralph. I’m also heavily influenced by animated works, especially those from Studio 4°C. My influences can also be found in fine artists, such as Egon Schiele, and authors, like Flannery O’Connor.

Mikayla Walton: What is a fun fact about this journal that you would like us to know?

Sean Dempsey: My most frequently drawn character is myself! The materials I construct books out of, the format and binding, and how the readers flip through it are all a part of that. I want the audience reading a story that takes place in a rugged jungle to feel a rough crude book cover. I want the reader to flip pages in an unconventional spiral while the narrative of the story spins out of control.

Sean Dempsey graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Sequential Art.
